*UPDATE 14/10/2022
**
After a long hiatus, i’ve finally had time to give running this set another crack! Due to the backlog of sets running through ePBT, the set will now be run through PBTFans. There are numerous updates to the page and set in response to this, I hope you enjoy it :)
/
/NOTE//*
Due to the significant majority of IC respondents requesting Icon modifiers, the set has been changed accordingly. Please refer to the updates tabs for more details on kitting changes
Inspired by the salt lakes found at Lake MacDonnell in South Australia, this is PBTFans Salt Lakes!
This sets intention is to translate the wonderful colours of these lakes onto your keyboard, how good is that!
To achieve this, the custom keycap set will be made in a Cherry-profiled PBT plastic through doubleshot molding.

Colours - Updated
The green and pink Pantones represent the lakes within the inspiration picture at their most vibrant, while the orange/brown is the earth causeway that separates the two.
The white pantone then represents both the salt of the lakes and landscape which is concentrated within the area, and how the lakes become salt pans when there is particularly harsh drought in South Australia.
The green and white have been updated since the previous iteration of the IC page. This has been to add a subtle bit more creaminess to the alphas, and to match the blue-green of the renders better.
Note that the picture below only shows digital representations of the selected Pantones, and thus shouldn’t be taken as the final expectation for the set.

Background
More

The Pink Lake appears as it does due to it’s higher concentration of salt, allowing algae called dunaliella salina and bacteria called halobacteria to flourish. These algae and bacteria secrete carotenoid red pigments, the same found in orange and red fruit/vegetables, which gives the water its colour! The vibrancy of this colour is dependent on how diluted the salt content of the water is, as lower concentrations of salt in the lake inhibit the population size of the algae and bacteria, thus how much pigment can be produced.
The Green Lake doesn’t take on this pink colour due to it’s lower salt concentration as a product of larger water volume to the same amount of available salt. Therefore, it never achieves the pink of its neighbour. However, the somewhat green colour is due to chlorophyll-filled algae preferring in the lower salinity environment. Thus the intensity of the green can also fluctuate depending on the season and how favourable it is for these algae to grow!
Mind you, people notice the change in colour of the pink lake a lot more than the green lake because it’s, well, pink… which leads to the fun fact about the inspiration image!
You may have noticed that the colours appear a bit saturated, which is a keen catch ;) . Funnily enough however, it is the land strip and the green lake that are arguably more vibrant than they appear in real life, not the pink lake! Go at the right time, and it indeed appears as in the image, which I was fortunate enough to have seen in person!

Novelties explained
More

The principle behind the novelties is to represent the three prevalent components of Lake MacDonnell; the salt, the land, and the water. I decided to be minimalistic with the designs out of preference as I thought they were cute, with the animal novelties in particular representing the prevalent animals surrounding the components at the Lake.
The critter has no justification, he’s just cute ;)
All novelties designed were designed by myself.

While the renders are colour matched to the best of my ability, monitors display digital RGB representations of the real world pantones.

A big thanks to the KRK Discord who gave their time and effort to help me put together this set for IC!
Special shout out to RaccOnCrack and my discord server for being patient with me while the set was on hold. You guys got this kit started again with your persistence so thank you!
Also a shout out to NoPunIn10Did, Cylent, DrHigsby, Konstantin, Hali for their advice on kitting for the previous iteration of this set.
ImperfectLink also deserves credit for creating KRK, which has been immensely valuable in helping me to create my first set. You also provide advice so freely on the server, making you an legend.
Finally a thanks to my girlfriend, who shares little interest in keyboards, yet always hears me out and encourages me.
